Cleanout, asbestos removal bids underway at 602 Chartiers Avenue

The stabilization and ultimate redevelopment of the former Bank of McKees Rocks building located at 602 Chartiers Ave. in McKees Rocks is underway.

McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation is working with SOTA Construction Services to begin work on the former Bank of McKees Rocks building in downtown McKees Rocks.

As a first step, the Bellevue-based construction company has invited interested contractors to submit proposals for building debris removal and asbestos abatement of building debris. Site tours for possible contractors were held in late June and bids were being accepted through 1 p.m. on July 7. Once completed, work to stabilize the structure will be next up.

In 2016, the MRCDC applied for the role of conservator of the long-abandoned structure through the state’s Abandoned and Blighted Property Conservatorship Act. The program allows for non-profit organizations like the CDC to step in as stewards to remedy major concerns on deteriorating residential, commercial and industrial buildings that have been left to ruin by the owner.

The project is expected to cost in excess of $2.3 million and is being funded through a variety of grants.
