With the snow and ice of winter just around the corner, a contest designed to beautify the 20 salt boxes sprinkled throughout the McKees Rocks community is in the works.
No longer will those community assets be a serviceable yellow, instead they’ll be decorated with winter scenes created by the more artsy members of the community.
Project coordinators and well-known community volunteers Lynne Deliman and Sandy Saban came up with the beautification project this summer and moved to get approval from members of McKees Rocks Borough Council during its September meeting.
“With the pandemic making it harder for people to get together, we wanted to create something to bring the community together while helping to beautify the borough, said Saban, a founding member of the McKees Rocks Historical Society and a board member of Focus On Renewal.
McKees Rocks council members, who approved the project Sept. 15, will have the final say on which artwork will be used. Council will review the final artwork during the November meeting. Project coordinators will be working with Public Works Director Bobby Thompson Jr. once painting commences.
“We’re looking for winter imagery, such as ice skating scenes, snowmen, polar bears or even a Sto-Rox Viking dressed for the cold weather,” said Deliman, whose volunteer efforts in the community run the gambit from pinching perogies at Holy Ghost to organizing the annual National Night Out events designed to bring police and residents closer together.
Any words included in the drawing must be limited to ‘Let It Snow,’ ‘Winter Wonderland’ or something similar. Color artwork submission should be no smaller than 5 x 7 and include contact information including name, address, telephone and email address.
Deadline has been extended to submit by Friday, Nov. 6. Entries are to be dropped off to Dispatcher Clara Priddy at the McKees Rocks Police Department, 340 Bell Ave., weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Donations to cover the cost of paint and other supplies for the projects are also being accepted and can be made to Priddy at the police station. Call (412) 331-2302 with questions.
