Streetscape & Roadway Updates: Safer 4-way signal intersection planned for Lower Chartiers

Engineering firm Michael Baker International (MBI) has recommended a four-way signaled intersection be built as part of safety updates planned at the junction of Chartiers Avenue and Furnace Street Ext., at the Shoppes at Chartiers Crossing.

These changes are part of McKees Rocks Community Development Corporation’s (MRCDC) phased plans for roadway and streetscape infrastructure improvements along Lower Chartiers Avenue. MRCDC is the project sponsor.

Residents and business owners provided feedback on this concept and others during a June 26 public input session hosted by MRCDC, McKees Rocks Borough and PennDOT. During this hybrid public session, proposals were made for a variety of concepts including a roundabout.

MBI is developing the phase one concept designs for Lower Chartiers Avenue (Linden Street to and including McDonald’s Way) to promote multimodal transportation safety and create cohesive, community-friendly spaces along the project area. Future phases will continue along Chartiers to the intersection with Island Avenue and include the municipal parking lot off Furnace St. Ext.
