Rox Bridge Closing

Odyssey Contracting, the company doing the work on the McKees Rocks Bridge
has notified us that they will be closing the bridge lanes that run traffic from the
Northside (Rte. 65) to McKees Rocks for approximately 3 months.
The closure will start effective  Monday, June 2, 2009.
No traffic will be able travel in that direction and no traffic will be able to access
the bridge from the Bottoms heading toward Island Avenue.

Saturday, June 20, 2009 (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Bernie Agreen, a St. Malachy parishioner, has authored a book called Images of America in which McKees Rocks and Stowe Township are featured (published by Arcadia Publishing). A book signing and sale is scheduled in the lobby of the Father Ryan Arts Center to benefit the preservation efforts of the historical society.

Events/Dates in McKees Rocks History –– June, submitted by John Makar:

         June 15, 1892............................... First issue of McKees Rocks Gazette

         June 16, 1915............................... William Zinkhan, liquor dealer (24 Chartiers Ave.) and first burgess of McKees Rocks, dies at his home, Chartiers Ave. at Bruce St., at age 66.

           June 5, 1919............................... Sheldon E. Thompson, engineer who erected all the machinery for the McKees Rocks plant of Pressed Steel Car Co., dies in Baltimore, MD at age 73.

         June 16, 1920............................... Flooding destroys the bridge over Chartiers Creek between McKees Rocks and Esplen.

         June 30, 1922............................... Pittock, PA Post Office is discontinued for the first time.

               June 1923............................... St. Mary Greek Catholic (now Ukrainian Orthodox) Church is dedicated.

           June 1, 1925............................... Truck load of fireworks explodes on Thompson Ave.  Two (2) men were “blown to bits” and over 20 were injured.  Damages totaled $50,000.

         June 16, 1929............................... Dewitt C. Fenton, President of Stowe Twp. School Board, dies at his 6 Highland Ave. home at age 60.

         June 16, 1931............................... West Park Car House closes.

         June 22, 1941............................... Renovated Stowe Tunnel reopens.

         June 22, 1952............................... Rt. 23 Sewickley-Coraopolis trolley service is discontinued.  Rt. 23 Neville Island service from Pittsburgh to Graham Loop, Neville Island is instituted on a regular basis.

           June 8, 1959............................... Pittsburgh Railways Co. gets provisional O.K. to replace its West End trolley lines, including Rt. 25 Island Ave. and Rt. 26 West Park with buses.  Track and overhead wires are to be left in place until final permission is given.  This will take effect with the closing of Point Bridge on June 21.

         June 21, 1959............................... The last 25 Island Ave. trolley passes through Stowe and McKees Rocks at approximately 12:30 AM.  The last 26 West Park does the same at around 3:00 AM.

               June 1961............................... Presston School closes.

           June 7, 1963............................... While inspecting the completed Island Ave. repaving project, Gov. William W. Scranton stops at Davis School to visit teachers and children who were waiting for his motorcade.

         June 27, 1963............................... A $150,000 fire destroys the old Presbyterian Church in Presston and the nearby Steel City Electric Corp. warehouse.

         June 30, 1966............................... Last day of operations for the Stowe Township and McKees Rocks School Districts.

         June 24, 1972............................... Days of continuous rain along with downpours from Hurricane Agnes brings devastating flooding to the Bottoms and other low-lying sections of Stowe and McKees Rocks.

         June 10, 1978............................... Fire races through five (5) buildings in the 700 block of Chartiers Ave.

         June 25, 1983............................... A general alarm fire destroy the old P&LE Planing Mill and Car Repair Shop.

         June 22, 1985............................... Fire destroys a three-story building at 1125 Island Ave.  Three (3) were killed.

         June 19, 1986............................... Presston Footbridge is closed for repairs.

         June 11, 1993............................... A state-sanctioned Board of Control takes over operations of the Sto-Rox School District.

         June 30, 1997............................... Miles Bryan and Hamilton Schools close.

           June 9, 2006............................... An explosion destroys a home on 11th St., West Park.

McKees Rocks Musings

I was saddened to hear of the passing of "Mrs. McKees Rocks", Mary Serkoch. I recently did a story on her for the website and her son sent a message telling me that she passed away. McKees Rocks bids farewell to two of it's proud people...Billy Mays and Mary Serkoch. May their memory be eternal!
