Our New Mural

Our latest mural, dedicated in October 2003, is on the side of the old Desk, Inc. building. This is the site of the exciting new Cultural Arts Center which will open sometime in 2006, offering professional quality instruction in music, dance, drama, visual arts, and literary arts to students of all ages.

The first mural of the McKees Rocks Mural Project was completed in 2002, and was truly representative of our community.   Local artist Jim Levendosky created the subject matter: an early 1900's depiction of life on Chartiers Avenue.  Jim was joined by 6 high school students from Sto-Rox.   He challenged the teens to expand their understanding of light and composition, and they made significant contributions to the artwork.  In the process, they gained a great deal of pride, sense of accomplishment, and the realization that a career in the arts is possible.

Ground Zero - McKees Rocks

In August, the group Ground Zero Pittsburgh selected McKees Rocks as the location for their monthly Urban Hike.  Ground Zero has conducted these walkthroughs around the Pittsburgh region, with the purpose of learning more about the many communities in our region.  Many of them had never been in McKees Rocks prior to this Hike. They were impressed with our town's architecture and unique food establishements, such as Pierogie's Plus and Mancini's, in neighboring Stowe Township.  To find out more about Ground Zero Pittsburgh, visit their web site at:
