There's More to Rotary Than Meets the Eye!
At a glance, Rotary might just seem like an exclusive club for area
business owners. Not true. According to Scott Baker of Jenny Lee
Bakery, Rotary is about members of the community getting together
to do something to give back to those who give to them through
their regular patronage from day to day.
"There's a real bond among members in the McKees Rocks area,"
Baker said.
Residents don't have to wait for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
to put on their annual Community Partners concert to give to local
organizations. All they have to do is attend one or both Rotary
fundraisers.
Around March or April of each year, Rotary hosts a pancake
breakfast. Last year's event raised $7,000, which was distributed
throughout the McKees Rocks area. Some of the money raised goes
toward the John Rackley Scholarship Fund, which awards $1,000
each year to a college-bound Sto-Rox High School student who
plans to major in business.
In September, Rotary hosts an annual golf outing. Held at the
Ponderosa Golf Course, the outing is open to everyone. The outing
features fundraising events like a silent auction, 50-50 raffle and they
sell Mulligans, which are repeat shots. If a golfer hits a bad shot and
wants to try again, he or she can - for a small fee, of course.
These are just a small sampling of the things that McKees Rocks area
business owners and professionals do to help serve the community.
And Rotary, which is an international organization, wants more
members. Their belief seems to be that you can never have too many
people working together for the good of their community. This is
part of what makes Baker feel good about being a member of Rotary.
"When your planning and spending time with leaders in the
community for a common cause," Baker said, "you become friends."
The McKees Rocks Rotary meets for one hour every Thursday from
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Rotary doesn't only meet to plan and host events, however. It is a
social organization as well as a community service one. Rotary meets
every summer for a luncheon held at Chartiers Country Club. It is
open to Rotary members, their families and friends of the Club. If the
luncheon would get crowded, Baker said, "that would be welcome."
So, don't hesitate to participate in Rotary fundraisers and special
events. More is more in their eyes because the more people come out
to support Rotary, the more they come out to support McKees
Rocks.
